Description
The most narrow growing of any coniferous evergreen we’ve grown, ‘Van der Akker’ is a columnar Weeping Nootka Cypress that takes up only a foot or two of space in the landscape. It adds up to 2 feet in height per year soaring to 20 feet or more in height when all grown up. An outstanding sentinel in the garden, its rigidly upright columnar form is handsomely clothed in downward facing fans of lacy, rich green foliage held very close to the its trunk. Upon closer observation, shaggy antique-red bark on the trunk of older trees and gray branches add additional interest. Sure to be a conversation piece, the Van der Akker Nootka Cypress is a fine sculptural accent in small garden spaces, home foundation plantings or elsewhere in the sunny landscape.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an upright columnar form to 20 feet or more in height and only a foot wide near the top and 2 feet at the base, the Van der Akker Nootka Cypress is ideal for use as a towering vertical accent in small garden spaces. Also nice to fill those narrow spaces in tall home foundation plantings or in containers. Two can be used to frame an entryway. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens and Asian theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 5 feet or more apart in spaced groupings
Growing Preferences
The Van der Akker Nootka Cypress is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. Established trees have good drought tolerance. As with so many other coniferous evergreens, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Good drainage is essential. A little shade is tolerated but we suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. No pruning is necessary however stray side stems can be removed for an even more narrow form.
