Description
Blooming heavier and longer than any other Loropetalum we’ve ever grown, Emerald Snow is a tough but beautiful evergreen shrub that shows off masses of pure-white, delicate fringe flowers in spring and then repeating off and on all the way through fall! The flowers explains the “Snow” in the name. The “Emerald” part in the name points to the foliage…its almost fluorescent, lime-green new growth produced in spring, or whenever the plant flushes out new growth, and how it sparkles against the emerald green mature foliage beneath. The contrast between the lime green new leaves and the dark green foliage beneath is quite remarkable.
NOTE: Emerald Snow Loropetalum was initially reported to grow 3 to 4 feet tall and wide but we’ve found that it quickly grows to double or more that size if left to grow naturally without pruning. As with most other Loropetalum, it responds well to pruning so can be kept to a smaller size.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing naturally to 8 feet tall and wide, or kept half that size with occasional pruning, Emerald Snow Loropetalum is ideal for use as an accent or specimen, in groupings, or as a natural or formal clipped hedge in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A this Loropetalum grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a small evergreen tree useful as a focal point specimen. Its low water needs makes it suitable for use in Xeriscape plantings and is a fine addition to white theme gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Loropetalum variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. Requires a well-lit space for overwintering indoors.
Growing Preferences
Emerald Snow Loropetalum is very easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant in a well-drained site. Established plants are exceptionally drought tolerant, requiring little if any supplemental irrigation. Requires no pruning however responds very well to almost any amount.
