Description
Closely related to Japanese maples, ‘Burgundy Jewel’ is a fantastic selection of Vine Maple showing off very large leaves in unusual colors that change through the seasons. Spring leaves are a deep purplish burgundy wine holding their color well into summer. By the end of summer the leaves transition to coppery and green shades. Cool temperatures in fall bring a kaleidoscope of colors in shades of orange, scarlet, burgundy and deep maroon reds. In winter the deep reddish-purple branches and stems take the stage. Foliage colors are more intense with more sun, so we suggest at least 5 or more hours of direct sunlight per day. Burgundy Jewel forms an erect vase shape up to 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide at 10 years of age. Excellent as an accent or specimen in smaller garden spaces, home foundation plantings and around patios and other outdoor living spaces. Can be grown as a multi-stemmed shrub or lower branches can be removed to form an attractive multi-trunk small tree.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its beauty, the Burgundy Jewel Vine Maple is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny or partially shaded environments. That said, in hot-summer climates we advise some filtered sun during the hot afternoon hours. For best foliage colors we suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Very nice around the garden pond or in rock gardens. Also, a good candidate for espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) or as an accent in home foundation plantings. Light colored shrubs and groundcovers plants really help to show off the burgundy leaves and a light background shows off the reddish-purple branches in winter.
Suggest Spacing: 8 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Burgundy Jewel Vine Maple grows best in a moist but well-drained acidic soil rich in organic matter and full sun or part shade. In hot-summer climates we suggest some filtered sun during the hottest afternoon hours. For best foliage colors we suggest a minimum of 5 hours direct sunlight per day. More is even better. Amend clay and other heavy soils to ensure good drainage. No pruning is necessary however lower branches can be removed to form an attractive small tree.
